Things You Really Need to Check Before Getting Into College

The checklist no one talks about, but everyone wishes they had known.

College life is often hyped as one of the best stages of your life. And honestly? It can be.

When someone says “college,” your mind doesn't jump to just textbooks and tests.

You think of friendships, late, night chai talks, endless memes, life, changing conversations, and moments that shape who you become.

But before you pack your bags and step into this exciting chapter...

Let’s ask a simple question:

💭 You do all your research when buying a phone. Specs. Reviews. Comparisons.

You try 15 outfits before picking one for a party.

So what about the place where you're going to live, learn, and grow for the next 4 years?

Most students (and even parents) check the obvious stuff:

✅ Academics

✅ Placement stats

✅ Faculty profiles

✅ Campus infrastructure

✅ Labs and tech facilities

But…

What if I told you that the most important factors, the ones that could make or break your entire experience, are the ones you’re probably ignoring?

Yep. These are the real reasons some students regret their college choice for the rest of their life.

Let’s break them down:

🎓 1. Faculty, to, Student Ratio

This one silently decides your growth.

A fancy faculty list on the website means nothing if you’re sitting in a hall with 120 students and no interaction.

Fewer faculty = less mentorship, fewer doubts cleared, no one to write you a great LOR.

You become just a roll number. And when your name comes up in placements, no one really knows you.

2.Culture & Mental Health

College is not just a place, it’s a vibe. Some campuses feel alive, inclusive, open, minded. Others? Rigid, toxic, or plain exhausting.

Ask yourself:

Can you truly be yourself here? Or are you constantly shrinking to fit in?

Now add the pressure of homesickness, grades, social drama, and uncertainty about your future. Do they have trained counselors? Peer support groups? Any actual mental health policy, or just posters on the wall?

A supportive culture + real mental health care = a safe space to grow.

You’re not a machine. You need a campus that sees you as a whole human being.

🧠 3. Space to Explore Beyond the Syllabus / Freedom for Extracurricular Growth

You grow outside the classroom. Clubs, startups, sports, internships, volunteering, these things shape you.

Is your college strict or supportive about this?

If everything outside academics feels like a “risk,” your growth becomes one, dime

🍛 4. Nutritious Food & Reliable Meal Plans

You’re going to eat over 1,000 meals a year here. It matters.

Is the food clean, healthy, and consistent?

Are meals available on time? Is there variety for different dietary needs?

Bad food leads to poor health, fatigue, burnout, and even depression.

You can’t focus on goals when your body’s fighting every bite.

🧼 5. Laundry Facilities

Sounds silly? Wait till you live it.

Imagine 200 students. 3 washing machines. Half of them broken. And you have an interview tomorrow.

Queues. Delays. Missing clothes. Dirty laundry piling up.

It may seem small, but over time, it messes with your routine, hygiene, confidence, and mental space.

You can’t shine when you’re stuck managing socks.

❗Why It’s Mandatory to Check All This

Let’s not sugarcoat this.

If you ignore these factors, you’re not just risking minor discomfort, you’re risking:

Wasting 4 years and a ton of money

Mental burnout or breakdown

A degree that doesn’t fit your goals

No career support

Health issues

A life you didn’t sign up for

Think Beyond the Brochure

Checking these things isn’t overthinking.

It’s not being “too picky.”

It’s called being smart.

So before you say yes to any college, do this:

✔️ Visit the campus

✔️ Talk to current students

✔️ Ask the hard questions

✔️ Look beyond the glossy images

✔️ Trust your gut

Because in the end...

It’s not just college.

It’s your life.
